Breaking News: Australia Limits International Student Enrolment

The Australian Government has announced its intention to set a National Planning Level (NPL), limiting new international student commencements to 270,000 for the year 2025.

What you need to know 

  • ◾Around 53,000 (16%) fewer new international students will be accepted to Australian study programs in 2025 compared to 2023.
    • ✔ Publicly funded universities are least affected; they will be allowed 145,000 new enrolments, just 1% below 2023 levels.
    • Enrolments at Private universities and Vocational Education and Training (VET) providers will be reduced by almost 30%, returning to pre-pandemic levels.

  • ◾ Many students are unaffected by the cap, including:
    • ✔ School (K-12) students.
    • ✔ Higher degree by research (HDR) students, including Doctoral degrees and Masters by Research or Philosophy degrees.
    • Standalone English language course (ELICOS) students.
    • Other specific exemptions.
