Skilled migrants are in high demand, just off Australia’s coast, in New Zealand. Recent research has shown that applications under the Skilled Migrant category and for Temporary Work Visas have severely declined with a difference of thousands just within the past year. Ruth Dyson, the New Zealand Labour Party spokesperson on immigration has stressed the need for skilled migrants to ensure New Zealand’s successful future.
This places greater strain on the current economy in New Zealand which is already showing signs of fatigue thanks to the shortages of skilled workers in many areas. Immigration is good for the New Zealand economy. Government research suggests that even at existing immigration levels there will be a gain of $28 billion to the New Zealand economy by 2021.
“The Minister’s response seems to be that we have an increasing number of unemployed, therefore we should reduce the number of people coming to New Zealand from overseas,” Dyson said. “This is an extremely shallow and damaging analysis.”
