UK Visa & Immigration have made some changes to accepted English language test providers for various visa types.
IELTS SELT Consortium is now the only approved SELT (Secure English Language Test) provider for visa applicants outside the UK. IELTS tests for visa purposes must be taken at an authorised SELT centre.
Not all IELTs test centres are approved to offer SELT tests, therefore it is important that applicants book the correct tests.
In Sri Lanka, British Council and ACBT are approved IELTS SELT centres. British Council IELTS exams can be booked through our sister company, Unitech and booked at its head office in The Visa Centre Colombo office building.
UK Student Visa applicants
International students going to study a degree at a UK university are not affected by this change, unless their Higher Education Institute (HEI) requests that they provide a SELT.
Changes came into effect on 6 April 2015. Transitional arrangements are in place and applicants with SELTs taken on or before 5 April 2015 will be able to use these alongside their immigration application until 5 November 2015.
For Tier 4 Student visa applications, the SELT requirement applies where:
- The student is not sponsored by an HEI
- The student is sponsored by an HEI but is studying a course below degree level.
Visa Categories requiring SELT TESTs
- Tier 1 (Entrepreneur)
- Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur)
- Tier 2 (General)
- Tier 2 (Minister of Religion)
- Tier 2 (Sportsperson)
- Family routes – application for leave to enter under Appendix FM or Appendix Armed Forces as a partner of a British citizen, person settled in the UK or member of HM forces
Applicants who are nationals of a majority English-speaking country or hold a degree qualification which was taught in English do not need a SELT English Test Score.
Tier 5 (Temporary worker) and UK visit visas do not have an English language requirement so does not need a SELT.
